Stay Safe, Play Dead

Lucy caught yet another opossum.  This one was smart(ish) and played dead.  It’s pretty convincing looking.

Stinky Possum

Our ever watchful dog, Lucy, caught yet another possum. This time however, the possum was covered in some kind of really stinky goo that Lucy thought smelled fantastic. She thought it was so fantastic that she rubbed the possum all over herself and licked the poor thing almost clean. Notice the possum is quite wet from all the dog slobber, but some goo is still on its face. Needless to say, Lucy got a bath pronto while we let the possum make its escape.

She Did it Again….

Our dog, Lucy, takes her job of defending her yard very seriously.

She caught this possum Saturday night.  Of the three that she has caught all have lived and that is only because they play dead.  This one was pretty small.  We brought Lucy in the house to give this little one time to make its getaway.

An Effective Possum Catcher

Our dog Lucy has been a busy girl keeping our yard safe from possums.

Lucy: I did it and am feeling slightly guilty.

Petey:  I think its squeaker is broken.

Never fear, this little fella was just playing dead.  Notice this possum has a lot of wet fur.  Lucy is not only good at catching them, she is full service and gives them a bath too.

Possum:  I am so out of here!

Traumatizing a Possum

Our dog, Lucy, loves to be outside in the evenings now that the temperature has started cooling down.  Sunday evening it got to be time to go to bed so I went to let her in.  She was laying on the front porch but was reluctant to come to me.  I didn’t think anything about it.  Finally, after calling her a couple of times she got up and ran inside.  To my horror, there was a very small possum laying next to where Lucy had been.  When I say small possum, I mean it had to be this years model and booted from momma’s pouch not too long ago.  I stood there watching it when it started to stir.  Silly thing had been playing dead.  I was very worried it had been damaged by Lucy so Glen and I went out and it immediately played dead again.  We inspected it as best we could and didn’t see any blood so we decided to let it be and see if it would leave or stay on the porch.  Luckily, as soon as the porch light went out the little fella took off at a fast pace.  We have no idea if Lucy was playing with it or if she was babying it because the poor thing was very wet with her slobber… rough housing or giving it a bath?  Thank you God for her not finding a skunk!

I know it looks like the little guy is bleeding in the picture, but I assure you, it is slobber.
