My What Big Red Eyes You Have

We have a LOT of cicada’s this year. Found this one on the bird bath. Thank God for a zoom lens on the camera.

Wasps Nest

When we were out hiking at Knob Noster State Park we came across an old wasp nest laying on the ground.  This is a paper wasp nest, which is characterized by open combs for brood rearing.

Wooly Bear

DSC02785-2

This is a wooly bear caterpillar.  I grew up calling them wooly worms.  This is the larval form of the Isabella Tiger Moth.   This caterpillar, according to legend, forecasts the coming winter weather.  Again I defer to the Old Farmers Almanac, (http://www.almanac.com/content/predicting-winter-weather-woolly-bear-caterpillars), “the wider that middle brown section is (i.e., the more brown segments there are), the milder the coming winter will be. Conversely, a narrow brown band is said to predict a harsh winter. ”  So, it is the wooly worm vs the persimmon seed in weather prediction.  I am voting for the wooly worm 🙂

Wheel Bug

I found this creepy bug just outside our front door.  A little research on the internet and I discovered it is a wheel bug….an assassin bug that preys on pest insects.  Not that I ever would, but if handled this bug can deliver a nasty bite that can hurt worse than a bee sting.  When the pain subsides it is often followed by numbness that can last several days.  So, yeah, it’s a creepy bug.

Fiery Seacher Beetle

Image

Discovered this metallic green beetle while I was snacking on mulberries.  We assessed each other and I decided to move on and let him have that particular branch.

Sunning itself

Image

This dragonfly, along with several others, was perched on our roof sunning itself.  It has a larger body that I am used to seeing on dragonflies.
